Badr Basalama is a Yemeni-born engineer and author. He studied petroleum engineering in Germany and spent more than forty years in government, development programmes, international organizations and private industry. His books bring an engineer’s eye for precision to the oldest questions: why the universe is so finely tuned for life, where the information in living things comes from, and what consciousness is. The Signature turns those questions into a scientific thriller, The Big Five Truths of the Universe sets out the evidence, and The Unfolding Oneness turns inward to the mind.
Badr Basalama was born in 1958 in the Hadramout Governorate of Yemen and grew up between Hadramout, Aden and Sana’a, where an early fascination with philosophy took hold. From 1979 to 1985 he studied petroleum engineering in Germany, a training that still shapes how he approaches big questions: through thermodynamics, physics and careful calculation.
Over more than four decades he worked across government, development programmes, international organizations and the private sector, while reading widely in Greek philosophy, the scholars of the Islamic Golden Age, Al-Ghazali and Ibn Rushd, the Enlightenment and modern physics. He sees science and faith as complementary lenses on the same reality.
In 2026 he published three books. The Signature, a scientific thriller, imagines a signal that carries the constants of physics. The Big Five Truths of the Universe sets out the case from cosmic origins to the emergence of life. The Unfolding Oneness explores the mystery of consciousness, keeping evidence, open theories and interpretation clearly apart.
Conversation topics
Each works as a podcast episode, an interview angle or a talk.
- Why is the universe so finely tuned for life? The constants of nature, the narrow window they sit in, and what that might mean.
- What came before the Big Bang?Beginnings, causes and why there is something rather than nothing.
- Is DNA a code?Information in living things and the question of where it comes from.
- Can science explain experience? The hard problem of consciousness, from blindsight to quantum measurement.
- Why write a thriller about cosmology?Stories as a way into ideas people would never read about otherwise.
- The forgotten scientistsAl-Khwarizmi, Al-Biruni, Ibn al-Haytham and the Islamic Golden Age’s place in the history of science.
